New EU Strategy for the Defense Industry: Opportunities and Challenges for Belgium

In a time of geopolitical shifts and increasing security challenges, the European Union is taking a historic step towards strengthening its defense industry. The EU is developing a new industrial defense strategy aimed at encouraging cooperation and investment in defense technologies. This initiative presents both opportunities and challenges for Belgium, its regions, its businesses, and its financial sector.

To discuss these developments, the Itinera Institute, in collaboration with the Representation of the European Commission in Belgium, is organizing an exclusive event on April 25, 2025, in Brussels. This event is targeted at Belgian defense and technology companies, financial institutions, experts, and policymakers. The focus will be on the implications of the new European strategy, evolving funding opportunities, and the impact on Belgium’s defense industry.

The program will provide an in-depth insight into the future of the European defense industry and Belgium’s role within it. The opening speeches will be delivered by Thomas de Béthune, Head of the Representation of the European Commission in Belgium, and Timo Pesonen, Director-General for Defense Industry and Space at the European Commission. Belgian Minister of Defense Theo Francken will outline the federal government’s vision for investments in the country’s defense industry.

During two panel discussions, representatives from Belgian defense and security companies, investment banks, and public funds will debate challenges and financing opportunities. Additionally, regional industry ministers will discuss the impact of this strategy on the different regions of the country.

This event aligns closely with Itinera’s mission to contribute to a sustainable and resilient society. Since its founding in 2006, Itinera has been committed to reforming the policy landscape and ensuring long-term prosperity. By organizing this debate, Itinera supports good governance, stimulates entrepreneurship as a foundation for wealth creation, and promotes initiatives that enhance well-being and quality of life.
