Resilience has become the most popular word in the policy debate, yet it remains poorly defined: cited far more often as a goal than understood as a mechanism. Under pressure from a polycrisis (geopolitical instability, climate change, industrial competitiveness, and an AI revolution reshaping the labour market) that vagueness becomes a real problem. Fellow Julien De Wit sets the record straight: resilience is not the same as stability, but a form of tension management, resting on four pillars: narrative, power, security and infrastructure. But a society that merely survives, without ever reconsidering itself, eventually hardens. True resilience also demands the courage to renew. In a new inspiration paper, drawing on his book De Comeback Code, De Wit shows how societies can not only weather crises, but emerge stronger from them, with concrete lessons for Belgium and Europe.
